Use a low gear when driving uphill or downhill for safety.

Driving in the mountains — “up and down” — stay safe by using the right gear!

An easy rule to remember: “On steep roads, use a low gear.”

Automatic Transmission (Auto)

  • Uphill: Use D and accelerate normally.
  • Downhill: Shift to 2 or S to help slow the vehicle using engine braking.

Manual Transmission

  • Uphill: Use a low gear to get more pulling power.
  • Downhill: Use a low gear to help brake with the engine (engine braking).

⚠️ Warning: Do not ride the brakes continuously when going downhill — this can cause brake fade or brake failure. Use your gears to assist.
