Is it safe to charge an electric car while it’s raining?
Nowadays, many people are switching to electric vehicles (EVs), but one common question still lingers in the minds of many: Can EVs be charged while it’s raining? Is it safe, and are there any precautions to take?
First, the charging station
There are two types of charging stations: DC and AC. Both are well-designed according to safety standards and equipped with protective covers and drainage systems. They also feature residual current devices (RCDs) and grounding systems to prevent electric leakage.
Electric vehicles
Even in the rain, EVs can operate normally because their electrical systems are protected by insulation and waterproof seals that prevent water from entering the charging connectors. In case of leakage, the sensor system will immediately cut off the power supply.
✅ Charging while it’s raining is safe.
However, in the case of heavy rain, it is advisable to wait until the rain eases to avoid water splashing into the charging plug or the car’s charging port.
💡 Better safe than sorry…
✅ Check the charging station, connector, and cable to ensure they are in good working condition.
✅ Use an umbrella while plugging in the charging cable to prevent water droplets from entering the electrical system.
✅ Wipe the charging port area dry before closing the cover.
