How to survive when your car falls into the water

Unexpected events can happen without warning! Therefore, staying calm is the first and most important thing to do when involved in a car accident where the car falls into water.

If you find yourself in a situation where your car is sinking into water, here are the recommended actions:

1. Stay calm.

2. Immediately unlock all the car doors.

3. Remove your seatbelt.

In the case of shallow water and the car is slowly sinking:

Quickly lower all windows to equalize the pressure between the inside and outside of the car. When the car is sinking, the doors cannot be opened due to the pressure of the water pushing the windows and doors from the outside. This will continue until the water completely fills the interior of the car. Therefore, lowering the windows as quickly as possible helps balance the pressure, making it easier to open the doors once the pressure equalizes.

If the car’s electrical system fails, remove the headrest. Once removed, you’ll see a two-pronged metal piece. Use it to strike the side window (front and rear windows are harder to break as they are safety glass). Tap about 1 inch into the window, then use force to pry it open. The window should break.

In the case of deep water and the car is fully submerged:

If you cannot open the doors, DO NOT break the windows. The external water pressure will cause broken glass to fly and potentially injure you. Instead, keep your head above the water and wait until the pressure inside and outside the car equalizes. This will make it easier to open the door. Once the door is opened, exit the car immediately.

To float upwards, maintain a state of weightlessness and then gradually swim to the surface of the water. This helps prevent being sucked in by strong currents or the pressure of the car causing you to sink further.
