Today, we’re here to warn everyone about the dangers of sleeping in a car with the air conditioner on.
Causes of Death While Sleeping in a Car with the AC On
When a car is parked with the engine running, it emits toxic carbon monoxide (CO) gas. If the windows are closed and the AC is on, the system may draw in CO from outside into the car. Inhaling CO while sleeping can lead to oxygen deprivation, ultimately causing death.
This is different from when the car is in motion, as the AC system continuously circulates fresh air. However, when oxygen levels in the body drop, symptoms may include:
- Fatigue
- Headache
- Difficulty breathing
- Drowsiness or seizures
- Irregular heartbeat
What to Do in Case of Oxygen Deprivation
▹ Turn off the engine immediately
▹ Open doors and windows to ventilate the air
▹ Exit the car and find a well-ventilated area to rest
How to Sleep in a Car Safely
▹ Avoid sleeping for too long, as it can be life-threatening without you realizing it
▹ Park in a safe location, such as a gas station or rest stop
▹ Turn off the engine and slightly lower all four windows
▹ Lock the car to prevent theft
▹ Set a timer to rest for about 15-20 minutes to allow the body to recover
Warning!
Long-distance drivers, night-time partygoers, and drinkers—be extra cautious.
Falling into a deep sleep in your car can be fatal.
